The Joe Rodota Trail (JRT) is a Sonoma County Regional Park space maintained by the County of Sonoma. To address the growing homeless encampment along the Trail – at the direction of the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors – the County of Sonoma activated its Emergency Operation Center on December 17th as a Joint Operations Center (JOC) involving participation from multiple County departments and non-profit service providers focused on resolving the situation on the JRT in a viable and effective manner.
At a Special Meeting on December 23, the County Board of Supervisors approved $12 million to fund a number of solutions to house and shelter those on the JRT. On January 14, the County Board of Supervisors approved implementation of some of those solutions. Their approved plans include:
- Purchasing a residence at 866 Sonoma Avenue to be used as a Shared Home. Shared Homes help people experiencing homelessness to transition to permanent housing. Read more about the Shared Home on the County’s website here: http://sonomacounty.ca.gov/Homeless-Emergency/Shared-Homes/
- Establishing a temporary shelter at 171 N. Pythian Road (referred to as the Los Guilicos campus). The shelter will consist of Pallet homes with locking windows and doors, and services geared to help residents move into permanent housing. The temporary shelter is an interim solution before the County establishes two longer term shelters that will operate through the end of the year as a pilot program. HOW TO HELP
In an effort to improve coordination of charitable efforts, members of the public who wish to donate supplies—including food, clothing, and basic survival gear—are encouraged to bring items directly to the outreach teams and local winter shelters who are working with and providing support services to individuals on the trail. This will ensure that supplies reach those who need them most, while keeping the trail clear from excess garbage and unsanitary conditions.
