The City of Santa Rosa has completed a major trunk sewer rehabilitation project along West 3rd Street utilizing an advanced trenchless pipe lining process known as Cured-In-Place Pipe (CIPP) Lining. The project, known as the Llano Trunk – West 3rd Street, Brittain to Darla, and Glenbrook Siphon Lining Project was a two-phase project that involved rehabilitating over ¾ of a mile of sewer pipe, mostly consisting of 54” diameter reinforced concrete trunk sewer piping.
The City awarded this construction project to SAK Construction in the Spring of 2020 and was able to complete all the lining on schedule before the wet season occurred which would have caused significant project delays. The City is proud of how well all the stakeholders on this project worked together while adjusting to completing construction projects during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cured-In-Place Pipe (CIPP) Lining is a trenchless rehabilitation technology that uses a fabric liner saturated with an epoxy resin in order to repair an existing pipe. The resin saturated liner is inserted into the existing pipe via a manhole and cured using pressurized hot water. The result is a strong plastic liner that conforms to the original pipe’s shape.
One of the biggest benefits to our community of this type of project is that no excavation of major roadways is required which greatly reduces the construction impact to our residents. Other benefits of this project are that the cost of lining is significantly cheaper than completely replacing the existing piping and it can extend the service life of our sewer infrastructure by more than 50 years.
The pipe sections that were lined were chosen based the on age, condition, and how critical they are to our City’s sewer system. Some of the pipes that were lined on this project were originally installed in 1956, over 64 years ago. The City also groups pipe sections together for projects like these based on proximity and ability to set up a single temporary sewer bypass system while pipe lining takes place.
