SANTA ROSA, CA – The City of Santa Rosa has announced the candidate nomination period for the November 3, 2020 City Council Election for Districts 1, 3, 5, and 7. Eligible candidates residing in District 1, 3, 5 or 7 who are interested in running for the seat within their district, may make an appointment with the City Clerk’s office beginning Monday, July 13 by calling 543-3015 or emailing swilliams@srcity.org.
The Clerk will go through the requirements of the candidate nomination process during scheduled appointments. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, additional social distancing measures will be in place during appointments to protect both candidate applicants and staff, including reduced building occupancy and plexiglass barriers. Face coverings must also be worn at all times in the building.
The candidate filing period will close at 5:00 p.m. on August 7, 2020. Candidates are strongly encouraged to make an appointment as soon as possible following the opening of the nomination period to ensure adequate time for a successful filing by the deadline. The list of important dates, benchmarks, and candidate information is now posted on the website at SRCity.org/2020Election.
In 2018, the City of Santa Rosa transitioned from at-large to district-based elections. Through a series of many public hearings and draft maps, the Council narrowed its selection down to a map dividing the City into seven districts. During the November 2018 election, the seats for districts 2, 4, and 6 were filled when John Sawyer was elected to represent District 2, Victoria Fleming was elected to represent District 4, and Tom Schwedhelm was elected to represent District 6.
The November 2020 election will transition the remaining at-large council seats to district seats providing representation to Districts 1, 3, 5, and 7. Registered voters residing in these neighborhoods will vote for district representatives for the first time in the November 3, 2020 election.
